Komodo Island is one of thousand island in Indonesia.  Komodo Island is the habitat of native animals komodo dragons (Varanus komodoensis). Komodo dragons live only on the island of Komodo, Rinca, Padar, Flores, Gili Motang, and Gili Dasami, located in Nusa Tenggara islands. In 1980 the island was inaugurated into the Komodo National Park in order to protect the Komodo dragon and other species that exist around the island including marine species.

On the island of Komodo, Komodo dragons live and breed well. Until the year 2009, on this island there are about 1,300 komodo dragons. If coupled with other islands, their number totaled about 2500. Komodo Dragon Facts:

Maximum size: 11 ft.

Maximum weight: 300 lbs.

Komodo National Park provides refuge for many species other than dragons. Some species are popular include: orange-footed scrub fowl, an endemic rat, and Timor deer. The Park is one of the Richest marine environments including coral reefs, mangroves, seagrass beds, seamounts, and semi-enclosed bays. Port in the national parks became habitatbagi more than 1,000 species of fish, some 260 species of reef-building corals, and 70 species of sponges. Dugongs, sharks, manta rays, at least 14 species of whales, dolphins, and sea turtles also make Komodo National Park as their home.

Komodo Island was first named by the Dutch. In 1910 Lieutenant Steyn van Hens Broek came to the island of Komodo to prove statements about the presence of Dutch troops large animal that resembles a dragon on the island. Steyn then kill a dragon, make the documentation and bring documentation to the Museum and Botanical Garden in Bogor to be investigated.

In 1986, the Park was declared as a World Heritage Site and a Man and Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, Both Indications of the Park’s biological importance.

In 2009, the Park has been named a finalist in the “New Seven Wonders of Nature” which was later published in 2010 by online voting at www.N7W.com. This is the seventh wonder who is actually due to ancient ecosystems on the island is still maintained until now. Komodo Island and other islands have some species other than dragons. It is estimatedthere are 277 animal species originating from a mixture of animals of Asia and Australia,comprised of 32 species of mammals, 128 species of birds and 37 species of reptiles.Protected animals of 25 species including land animals and birds, because their numbersare very small.

On 26 October 2011, founder and president of New7Wonders, Bernard Weber, presented certificates to the finalists New7Wonders of Nature to the head of the Komodo national park and Jusuf Kalla, the former vice president of Indonesia as an ambassador for the island of Komodo.
